Radio Band Wagon RoadShow Review

There was no shortage of music and muscle cars at the inaugural Bandwagon Roadshow on Saturday at the Citrus Bowl’s Festival Field, but one thing was in shorter supply “I need ice,” said Orlando musician and radio host Joseph Martens, among the organizers behind the grassroots festival that aims to go national next year. “But if that’s the only problem, then we’re doing pretty well.”

Orlando acts and nationally known headliners Snoop Dogg and Sublime with Rome provided the soundtrack for an event designed to tap into the bond between the custom-car crowd and music fans. There also were works on display by local artists and a midway with souvenirs and other diversions.

“The youth and car culture and modern music are all coming together,” said Orlando entrepreneur Jimi Beach, 38, who launched the concept through his company, Top Speed Adventures. The goal is to expand the event to eight other markets.

If the idea was cool, the day wasn’t.

In the unshaded field on a brutally hot afternoon, it was tempting to hop into one of the several dozen cars on display and give the AC a workout. Perhaps because of the temperature, the crowd was slow to develop.

After dark, however, the field was packed and the heat had subsided by the time Snoop took the stage. The iconic rapper was in fine form, too, accompanied by a lean rhythm section that provided pop to signature songs such as “P.I.M.P.” and “Gin and Juice.”

The music was solid all day, with rousing sets by Orlando’s Rocket 88 and Big Jef Special, among others. A few of the set times were changed at the last minute, but there were otherwise few noticeable glitches.

An afternoon of roots-oriented rock followed by Snoop and Sublime gave the event a kind of schizophrenic feel, but no one seemed to mind.

“”An event like this is supposed to be like a choreographed dance,” said Big Jef Special guitarist Brian Chodorcoff. “This is more like a hoedown, but hoedowns are fun.”

Martens agreed: “The vibe is really good,” he said. “People are enjoying themselves and that’s what we were looking for.”
